Anime Expo 2011 Anime Licences….That Actually Matter

I will try as much as I can not to go on a tangent and talk about how awesome Mikunopolis was. Just wanted to get that out of the way as soon as possible.

Anyway AX  happened and with every major convention comes new big Anime licences for Region 1. Now why should we care what R1 licencees get? Well if you are like me and watch your Anime in the English language, then you are going to pay attention to the licences that the companies in the United States aquire because they dub atleast 95% of Anime. So without further ado here are the licences from this years Anime Expo that actually mattered, no Cat Planet Cuties here… oh Man *faceplam*.

Kimi Ni Todoke

 Company: NISA

Release Date: October 2011

Format: DVD/BD combo with Artbook, Sub Only

Genre: Romance, Comedy, Shoujo

Kimi Ni Todoke is about as pure as high school romance can get, The main character Sawako (female) is a timid girl thats just trying to “fit in”, the only thing holding her back is her appearance. Her resemblance to Sadako (that scary chick from the ring) has people running in the other direction whenever she tries to approach them. Sawako is as kind as they come and her lack of sufficient human interaction causes her to think she has “strong feelings of kindness” towards the hottest guy in school Kazehara (male).

I am currently reading the manga to this series and am enjoying it a lot, the story is not too deep or too shallow to pass off as just another RomCom. I am kind of glad I held off watching the anime via fansub because now i have the chance to watch it legally. NISA have recently started packaging their anime quite handsomely with artbooks and the lot, their DVD/BD combo packs also help keep the “1080p only” crowd happy despite not having dubs. Love Comedy, Love Romance dont let this one pass you by.

Bleach: Fade to Black

Company: VIZ Media

Release Date: November 2011

Format: DVD and Blu Ray. Dub included

Genre: Shounen, Action, Fantasy

Dont watch Bleach? move along. Loved the Soul Society Arc? This movie was made just for you. Just like all prior Bleach Movies this one is also a side story (non canon), It conviniently pits Ichigo against the Captains once more this time with his bankai from the get go. How do they pull this off? Convinient Mass Amnesia, hey its a side story get over it.

Company: NISA

Release Date: July 2011

Format: DVD/BD combo Sub only

Genre: Adventure, Action

This Show was announced in April but a release date was announced at this years Anime Expo. I have not seen this series at all but all I hear from the people that have is praise. Its got a Unique art style and is also set in fueadal Japan. Also when was the last time we saw a good adventure anime?

Deadman Wonderland

Company: FUNimation

Release Date: TBA

Format: TBA

Genre: Shounen, Action, Sci Fi

From the creator of Eureka 7 and the studio Manglobe (Samurai Champloo, Ergo Proxy) that alone should be enough to get you excited for this title. This is a show that I believe has that Western mass appeal similar to Champloo. I have not seen this series either but the synopsis is easy enough to understand.

“Middle school student Ganta Igarashi witnessed the slaughter of his entire class by the mysterious ‘Red Man’, and as the only survivor, he was labeled a mass murderer and sentenced to death. Now an inmate at the privately-owned prison and ‘amusement park’ known as Deadman Wonderland, Ganta must try to survive in a place where inmates are the main attraction in brutal gladiator-style games. At the same time, he must attempt to uncover the truth behind the ‘Red Man’, his mysterious childhood friend Shiro, and why he was the only survivor that bloody day.”

Yes it does get bloody.

Company: FUNimation

Release Date: TBA

Format: TBA

Genre: Sci Fi, Thriller, Comedy

Self proclaimed Mad Scientist Rintaro Okabe AKA Hyoiun Kyouma accidentally invents a time machine using his microwave and cellular phone, The contraption sends messages to the past and causes alterations to the future. The shows characters are designed by Huke of Black Rock Shooter Fame so expect very good looking characters. The show has constant nods to otaku culture and this provides the comic relief which is quite honestly the strong point of the series for me.

ef: a tale of memories

Company: Sentai Filmworks

Release Date: TBA

Format: TBA

Genre: Romance, Drama

This show has been described to me as a tale of two separate romance stories told well. Most fans of Romance/Drama series point to this show as an example of a romance anime done well. I have had this on my watch list for a very long time now so glad to see it licenced.

C – The Money of Soul and Possibility – Control

Company: FUNimation

Release Date: Sometime in 2012

Format: DVD and Blu Ray, Dub included

Genre: Thriller, Action, Sci Fi

Kimimaro is a College student studying Economy, hes broke works part time to earn a living and has very humble ambitions. One day he is visited by a Mysterious man that offers him an ATM that has an exorbitent amount of money but has to offer his future as collateral. The catch is he has to frequently duel other “entres” just like him in the Financial District. However, the consequences of running bankrupt in the Financial District have severe consequences in the real world.

I had very high expectations for this show, Directed by Kenji Nakamura, Screenplay by Takagi Noboru (Durarara!) and noitaminA. It was not bad it just wasnt the best show ever, I still liked it because it reminded me of Eden of the East which was excellent. Also [MICRO, MEZZOFLATION] [YOU HAVE GAIN] [YOU ARE BANKRUPT] Awesome Engrish.

Last Exile: Fam, the Silver Wing

Company: FUNimation

Release Date: TBA

Format: DVD and Blu Ray, Dub Included

Genre: Adventure, Sci Fi, Steampunk

The Sequel to the very popular Last Exile. Only those priveledged enough to see its world premier at Anime Expo have an idea of what the show is about. Im pretty sure its just as sequel as sequels get.

Puella Magi Modoka Magica

Company: Aniplex USA

Release Date: TBA

Format: TBA

Genre: Magical Girl, Thriller, Action

Madoka is a normal High School Girl that is one day given the priveledge to become a Magical Girl thanks to the cute furry creature Kyubey. Kyubey offers a deal that is too good to be true make any wish and you will become a magical girl. However, the girls are required to fight witches on a very regular basis.

Arguably the best show that has aired this year, Madoka Magica smashed the Japanese Blu ray records. This one is a keeper people, dust those shelves create that special place for it because every Otaku needs to have this one.

The other good licences where, Dirty Pair, Blue Exorcist,New Dororon Enma Kun and Proffesor Layton. Its a good year to be an anime fan. What titles where you excited for?

  1. The only licenses that matter to me are Puella Magi and Stein’s Gate. The others are subpar anime in my eyes.

  2. Why users still use to read news papers when in this technological globe all is available on web?

Well said but my Opinion Is...
