Winter 2012 Anime Impressions Guide
You have been cordially invited to read the Kidd’s Anime Blog Winter 2012 Anime Impressions Guide! This is the start of a new seasonal feature for Kidd’s Anime Blog that show previews of the newest anime at the start of each season so that you may better understand which anime are worth your time. These impressions are based off of the first episodes alone but also count as a prediction for what to expect from the rest of the show. Shows are listed in the order I watched them in. So without further ado, let’s begin with Amagami impressions!
Amagami SS+ plus
Episode 1 Impressions: I’m so happy Amagami is back! From this episode we’ve learned that the format is going to still be omnibus but this time it’s an epilogue based on the first season and the girls featured will be in reverse order! So that means Ayatsuji is the first girl to develop her relationship further with Junichi!
Many elements are brought over from the last season like familiar background music, singer for the OP and ED is azusa, the same as the OP for last time. But it seems there isn’t a custom ED that the current girl sings this time… a shame but I’m glad we had that experience at all. Another note to add is that there will be two episodes per heroine… so I guess this is a 12 episode show. I’d like for more but I’m glad we get this at all! This is a must see if you’ve seen the prior series. It’s a refreshingly romantic anime with a light sprinkle of sexiness.
Mouretsu Pirates (Bodacious Space Pirates)
Episode 1 Impressions: This season is the return of Tatsuo Sato directing anime. He’s been gone for awhile. After Stellvia his only relevant directing role was Shigofumi. And of course he is known as the director of one of the greatest anime of all time Martian Successor Nadesico! With this anime, like with Shigofumi, Tatsuo-san is adapting light novel material into anime. Before Shigofumi he worked on original anime without any source material. So did Tatsuo-san do a good job adapting it into an entertaining anime like he did with Shigofumi? You betcha! Like always the pacing is great and it’s very fun and entertaining.
Supposedly the light novel is hard scifi with a lot of descriptions about spaceships. But none of that shows in the anime. The characters are all interesting and the animation is well done. Which is understandable since Satelight, animators of Macross Frontier, are in charge of animation production. Despite the absence of any sexy scenes, and there won’t be according to feedback from people who have read the light novels, it’s still very entertaining and worth watching. Also Kana Hanazawa is the seiyuu for the black-haired girl! Moé!
Episode 1 Impressions: Just like with Amagami SS+ this is a direct continuation of a previous series. This is the sequel to Bakemonogatari. What’s different this time? Well, Koyomi Araragi’s two imoutos, one of them pictured above watching TV, will have a greater role in the story compared to their short appearances last time. … imoutos!! ^o^/ … That said everything is as it was in terms of the animation production. Just as high quality as the last with long, and interesting, conversations between the characters and stylized environments that seem more like a set than a real location. I’d say if you want to watch a moé anime this season and you only had one choice then watch Nisemonogatari! You won’t be disappointed!
High School DxD
Episode 1 Impressions: I was hyped for this anime. The denizens of 2ch were talking about how much better the DxD light novel is in terms of harem hijinks compared to Infinite Stratos. Now if anyone’s seen IS you’d KNOW how amazing it is as a harem anime. IS redefined how good a harem anime could be. IS raised the bar. Does this? Does DxD raise the bar? Does it live up to the hype? Well, not so far. But now that the introductory episode is out of the way we could see some sexy and funny harem situations in the upcoming episodes that make us grow to love the characters.
Rinne no Lagrange (Lagrange -The Flower of Rin-ne)
Episode 1 Impressions: Ranka! The OP & ED are sung by Ranka’s seiyuu Megumi Nakajima! I’ve listened to them both more than one-hundred times since this has aired! I love Ranka! ^o^/ I’ve been looking forward to Xebec’s grand return to original anime for television with their last one being Stellvia in 2003 and afterwards they canceled Nadesico 2 and the second season of Stellvia. Tatsuo Sato, director of the aforementioned anime hadn’t worked for Xebec since. With Xebec pushing out mostly light novel adaptations since his departure it seemed like they’d never create an original televised anime again. And now he’s back as chief director, with a neophyte director underneath him, for Lagrange! Almost a ten year absence from any creative role at Xebec. And he’s back! I’m so happy! My favorite director of all time!
This anime is very similar to Evangelion, even outright copying the mecha fighting sequence from the first episode of Eva. Madoka Kyouno is the main heroine. She’s a energetic and “genki” school girl who has so far had a normal and fulfilling life. Personally I prefer a cute girl with an uplifting and positive personality compared to the eternally depressed Shinji from Evangelion. Also Lan takes the place of Rei as the emotionless blue-haired girl but Lan seems to have a bit of a quirky personality that shows she’s more socially awkward than emotionless. And there will be a third girl to complete the girls-who-pilot-robots trifecta to appear in the second episode. Despite the similarities I’d say it’s still a good anime to check out because of the notable creative talent involved with the project. Lagrange has potential but it needs to prove itself as it’s own anime and it’s own world and not just an aping of Evangelion with cuter girls.
Episode 1 Impressions: Whoo hoo! I’ve been hyped for this and I’m so happy it’s finally arrived! Anime of the season! ^o^/ This is going to be the anime of the year! It will be glorious and long lasting just like Macross Frontier was! And just like Macross Frontier it has lots of memorable characters that we will all easily grow to love and know. Aquarion EVOL is the sequel to Aquarion that takes place 1200 years later. You don’t need to see Aquarion to see this. In fact I would highly suggest you skip Aquarion since it’s just not that good and feels dated and is boring. DON’T WATCH AQUARION! Just watch this, Aquarion EVOL, and don’t worry abut being a completionist.
The animation production company for Aquarion EVOL is Satelight and with their back catalog, this show and Mouretsu Pirates they have solidified themselves as top tier anime company alongside the likes of Sunrise and Studio BONES. I love this anime so much already and it’s just the first episode. Well considering that the first episode is 42 minutes long helps this too. Basically it’s two episodes together so that we don’t have to deal with a cliffhanger. Also he music will be composed by Yoko Kanno which can’t hurt!
I like how this really feels like a theatrical experience. It’s very well produced with amazing and original looking character designs, great mecha animation, exciting mecha battles, good voice acting with both newer and more established popular seiyuu! I love how there is such a large cast of characters and yet they are all different and I want to get to know them all and find out more about them and watch their relationships with each other grow. I wonder who will be attracted to whom also… there seems to be an equal amount of girls to boys so they might each have romantic situations! It doesn’t seem like there will be a love triangle or anything like that. Although I wouldn’t mind some drama like that but it’s too soon to tell.
As for the characters themselves I don’t find anything objectionable about them. The girls are all cute and feminine with different color and styles of hair, adorable voices and their own unique personality. Even the girls who are just background characters look different from each other. Also Kana Hanazawa is the seiyuu for the green-haired Zessica while Megumi Nakajima voices Sazanka who is the black-haired girl! It’s a dream come true! Two of my favorite voice actresses in an anime by my favorite anime company! The voices of Charlotte Dunois and Ranka Lee in the same anime fighting alongside each other in mecha! It’s incredible! I’m so happy! Now the male character design is much improved from Satelight’s last original anime, Macross Frontier. There are no creepily effeminate guys and instead these guys are pretty cool, have normal masculine desires and are characters that the male audience of this show can identify with. I like all the guys on the good side. Especially Andy. I’m rooting for him! I hope he ends up with a cute girl on his arm by the end of the anime! ^o^/
I also like how they are so energetic when they fight in their mecha. I definitely get this, you know, pumped up feeling when watching the battles. Especially how when they merge it’s almost spiritual and transcends the physical world like a Newtype experience. And it’s also kind of, you know, sexual. It’s all very exciting to watch. You have to watch it! It’s great! The best mecha experience this season for sure! Whether you’re a moé fan or mecha fan or you just want to watch an entertaining anime this is not one to be missed!
Senki Zesshou Symphogear
Episode 1 Impressions: Okay. Great. Well. There are three science fiction anime in this guide that I’d consider superior. But if you have time then it wouldn’t hurt to check this out. Especially if you frequent mecha related discussions. This is more of an anime for mecha fans than for moé fans in my opinion. Now, yes this ranks lower for me than the other scifi anime but that doesn’t mean it’s bad. On the contrary this is a very good anime. A very good anime for a certain type of fan. If you liked Macross 7 or GaoGaiGar then this anime is for you!
Ano Natsu de Matteru (Waiting in the Summer)
Episode 1 Impressions: Have you ever watched Onegai Teacher? If you have let’s pause a moment. More of a good thing is good right? Right. Okay. Ano Natsu de Matteru is a romance anime by the same animation team as Tora Dora and Ano Hana. The character designs and setting of this anime feel very much like Ano Hana. And I suspect their will be some dramatic moments as the show gets further along. Along with the high animation quality there are also some nudity and sexy camera angles that add a fun spice to the show. An ordinary high school boy gets into a relationship with an alien girl and who also has other possible love interests and you’ve got a love triangle and some drama down the road! I’d check this out for what I suspect will be the best romantic drama of the season!
Papa no Iukoto wo Kikinasai! (Listen to me, girls. I am your father!)
Episode 1 Impressions: Yes! Every season needs an anime like this! This season is now complete! The animation production is by feel who also animated Kiss x Sis! And like that, this anime is a romantic comedy with cute moé girls and intimate situations! This seems to have light teasing compared to the steamy scenes in Kiss x Sis though! Yuuta Segawa is a college student who develops a crush on his sempai who has a strange personality but a huge rack! Then we’re introduced to his three nieces Hina, Miu and Sora. Sora is the oldest of his nieces and has serious crush on Yuuta, I can’t wait to see more of her next episode! I hope they end up together by the end! Maybe even have a harem ending which would be even better!
Danshi Koukousei no Nichijou (Daily Lives of High School Boys)
Episode 1 Impressions: It’s Nichijou but with guys instead of moé girls. It’s pretty funny. Each episode is broken into mini-episodes centered around a joke. The jokes are situational and don’t rely on supernatural elements. It’s basically just high school boys joking around with each other and playing pranks. I laughed. I’d say it’s worth watching but not owning since there aren’t really any interesting heroines like in typical moé comedies. The anime stays interesting and it’s easy to watch so I’d say check it out if you’re ever bored. If you want to watch more comedy anime similar to this then watch Golden Boy, The Ping Pong Club and Cromartie High School.
Tantei Opera Milky Holmes II
Episode 1 Impressions: Wow, this is so hilarious and random! Even better than the previous season! I laughed more than I did with Danshi Koukousei no Nichijou. And even better this is full of lots of adorable moé girls! This is basically a “cute girls doing cute things anime” type of anime. And it excels at it! It really is filled with silliness and it’s a pretty hyperactive anime. I’m not sure what else to say except check it out if you want to watch a nonsensical comedy starring moé girl detectives! I’m a fan, and I’m going to keep watching this one. Milky Holmes! ^o^/
