Madman and Siren Visual Supanova Anime Licenses

Supanova Melbourne happened last weekend and they got a tonne of awesome anime licenses announced both at the event and just after it. Here is a list of what was licensed and what to expect from them.

Aquarion Evol

Licensor:  Madman
Year: 2012
Studio: Satelight
Release Date: TBA

The first Aquarion is widely accused of being another Evangelion rip off, which when you consider that is was made by the same guys that did Escaflowne, the accusation starts to hold some weight. The sequel (of sorts) is meant to have a different theme and atmosphere about it, mostly focusing heavily on the Mecha action and character drama. Mari Okada (Toradora, AnoHana) writes the script for this one meaning it does have a lot of potential to be good but hardly great.

Synopsis
12,000 years have passed in this world, the story of Apollon and Sylvie have become a children’s story called “Skies Of Aquaria”. The “Abductors” Invaders from Altea come to Earth with only one purpose, they invade to harvest humans. DEAVA the Aquaria Academy exists to train men and women to use Aquaria, but they cannot ever merge because of Guize stones, these block an “unholy union” between genders. The story follows Amata and Mikono in their enrollment into DEAVA, and fight the Abductors.”

Mayo Chiki

Licensor: Madman
Year: 2011
Studio: Feel
Release Date : TBA

I have never been a fan of slapstick, Ecchi humour so there really is nothing positive I can say about Mayo Chiki except the fact that it has Kana Hanazawa in it. This stuff seems to be selling well allready so if you like Echhi fanservice shows (which a lot of you do according to the sales figures) this is for you, Enjoy. Oh also Traps.

Synopsis
Kinjirou Sakamachi has gynophobia (fear of women), due to his violent mother and sister. Subaru Konoe is the butler of his classmate, Kanade Suzutsuki, and has to dress as a male due to butlers having to be men. When Kinjirou discovers Subaru’s secret, Kanade promises to cure Kinjirou of his phobia. Kinjirou and Subaru are forced due to circumstances to spend time together and defend Subaru’s secret while trying to cure Kinjirou’s fear.”

Star Driver

Licensor: Madman
Year: 2010
Studio: Bones
Release Date: Late 2012

At face value there are a lot of reasons to be excited for this right? Same Director as Soul Eater, Studio Bones responsible for Full Metal Alchemist, Bebop etc, Interesting Mecha Design and Over the top action and all out Fabulousness . As exciting as all that sounds this show is notorious for totally going off the rails once the main “plot” kicks in. The concept is exciting and “unique” but the story is sub par. Think a less awesome Gurren Lagann.

Synopsis
” Upon enrolling at Southern Cross Island High School, Takuto and his friends become embroiled in a conflict with a clandestine society to control giant machines, called Cybodies, sealed under the island whose powers are bound by special shrine maidens. What secrets will Takuto dig up, and how will he deal with the obstacles that lie ahead of him? This struggle will threaten to tear apart the entire island!”

Thermae Romae

Licensor: Siren Visual
Year: 2012
Studio: DLE
Release Date: July 2012

I would like to take this rare opportunity to wear my hipster hat and say I knew of the popularity of this title all the way back in 2010 when a feature on the magazine it runs in (Comic Beam) was broadcast on a show called Imagin.Nation. Comic Beam would be the manga equivalent to animes noitaminA.
This obviously meant it was a perfect fit for the noitaminA slot, I have not had an opportunity to see it yet but I definitely will and having it released so soon after its Original air date is a huge plus. That and the fact that this is the first English language release in the world means it will sell like hot cakes, well atleast I hope so.

Synopsis
In Hadrian Rome, Lucius was a Roman architect whose designs often got rejected by builders. To cheer him up a friend of his invited him to relax at a thermae (public bath). Inside the bath Lucius was accidentally trapped in an underwater hole by suction; when he finally managed to emerge on the surface he found himself in a very different bath: in 20th century Japan.”

Legend of The Legendary Heroes

Licensor: Madman
Year: 2010
Studio: ZEXCS
Release Date: TBA

Legend of the Legendary Heroes or LoL Heroes as everyone likes to call it is a fantasy epic meant to tell an emotional and action packed story of a young anti hero, lazy bastard hero and his journey through this politically unstable Kingdom. The story is very standard fantasy, the action is very standard fantasy, the character designs are very standard fantasy but the jokes, no the jokes are pretty different so watch it for the jokes. That or for the awesome voice cast.

Synopsis

Shiki

Licensor: Siren Visual
Year: 2011
Studio: Duame
Release Date: July 2012

Oh boy, don’t we all just love those over-stylised Vampires? Ive talked about how I feel about Shiki a couple of times on the blog so go check those out. All I have to add to my previous articles is the fact that, this show has one of the best final arcs I have ever seen in anime. Does it make up for the horrendously slow paced start? Not for me, but it can be overlooked once you are 15 episodes in.

This show is getting a dub which is very interesting considering it was done by FUNimation. You can watch the dub trailer here.

Sotobamura is a small village with around 1300 residents; so small the village isn’t even connected to a single highway. An isolated village in which old customs, such as the burial of the dead, are still practiced. One day, the bodies of three people are found dead. Although Ozaki Toshio, the village’s lone doctor, feels uncertain, he treats the deaths as a normal occurrence. However, in the days following, the villagers start to die one after the other.”

Beserk: The Golden Age

Licensor: Madman
Year: 2012
Studio: Studio 4C
Release Date: TBA

The highly anticipated trilogy of films faithfully adapted from the manga will get a chance to be showcased on the Silver screen hopefully at this years Reel Anime. I have always wanted to see Beserk but the poor quality animation and lack of a conclusive ending has always kept my interest at bay. Hopefully this trilogy does have a proper conclusion because from what I have seen its got the amazing animation down pat.

No Synopsis Available unfortunately, It is most likely going to be a retelling of the series.

Oreimo

Licensor: Madman
Year: 2010
Studio: AIC Build
Release Date: Late 2012

This show is the REAL reason I am so excited for this set of announcements, clocking in at number 31 on my top 50 anime of all time its no surprise I jumped for joy when this was announced. This is show is as generic as they come but its the little differences it has that make it so great. It is NOT for anyone but the hardcore Otaku which is a shame but also what makes it special. The special Limited Edition release from Aniplex sold out within weeks which led me into despair because that was one hell of a package. I doubt Madman will have a similar release but one thing is for certain, this is a niche title meaning it will have limited copies. If you want Oreimo, grab it as soon as you see it, unless you wanna pay $700+ for it later on.

Synopsis
Oreimo is an adaptation of Tsukasa Fushimi’s light novel series Ore no Imouto ga Konnani Kawaii Wake ga Nai. The popular comedic novel series-turned hit anime originally aired in 2010 in Japan. The story follows the daily life of an ordinary high school boy named Kyousuke Kousaka. Kyousuke’s younger sister Kirino is a pretty fashion model, but also hides a dark secret of being an otaku of adult games. Kyousuke is the only person to whom Kirino reveals her hidden obsession and other issues.”
