Games To Look Out For From E3 2017

I haven’t written one of these in a long while but the time felt right mostly because of the occasion and because I feel the break did me some good. The occasion ofcourse being E3 which has consistently been getting better and bigger over the years, much like my passion for the gaming and nerd culture industry as a whole. This years E3 promised brand new hardware and a variety of games like never before. For the first time console gamers have options similar to PC gamers regarding their specifications and control options, the Switch would be having its first E3 presentation but for some reason the expectations and hype seemed a tad more tempered than usual. None the less I feel like E3 delivered and left us with a bunch of games and hardware to look out for and here are my personal picks and some that I figure you should look out for as well in the near future. Lets start with the ones we expected;

God of War

God of War

Publisher: Sony

Released on: PS4

Release Date: 2018

The reboot of God of War was probably my game of the show at last years E3 its bold move to have the camera right over the shoulder meant that there would have to be a serious readjustment to the mechanics of the game. It also meant that the story telling techniques used would be a lot more different and personal than previous iterations. The inclusion of the son and learning that there’s a dedicated “son button” is the main reason I am very excited to see this game next year. This is Sonys next big tent pole game and I believe it will do very well for them.

Assassins Creed Origins

AssCreed Origins

Publisher: Ubisoft

Released in: PS4, Xbox One and PC

Release Date: October 2017

Game director Ashraf Ismail made the last good AssCreed game in Black Flag. 4 years of development later and it seems like his team has reinvented the Assassins Creed formula once again by making it an open world emergent RPG. Loot, stats, loadouts, experience points and a brand new combat mechanic for the franchise means that there is new life that has been breathed into the game. The game looks fantastic and I personally do not regret skipping all the filler AssCreed games that have come in-between.

Far Cry 5

Far-Cry-5

Publisher: Ubisoft

Released on: PS4, Xbox One and PC

Release Date: November 2017

Far Cry feels like it’s on the verge of getting old and tired and Ubi realise this. Their solution to this is by reinventing the core gameplay loop and quest system. Far Cry 5 is an open ended sandbox game that requires the players to explore and interact with the games NPC’s in order to activate quests. This is huge because it means that players are dropped into the game and are not told exactly what to do or where to go or even how to go about it. It’s a departure which emphasises that players experiences of the narrative will drastically differ. This also means that the replayability of the game will be immensely high. Add that on top of the solid outpost takeover gameplay loop as well as the fascinating and very current social political setting and characters chosen and we are in for what could be a classic video game and maybe even the best in the franchise.

Super Mario Odyssey

Mario Odyseey

Publisher: Nintendo

Released on: Nintendo Switch

Release Date: Fall 2017

The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild has sold more copies than there are Switches, which means that there is a thirst for the system and more AAA calibre games from Nintendo. This is the first mainline 3D Mario game since Galaxy and the new “cap-ture” mechanic is the driving force behind the game. The game looks and sounds solid and will most likely be just as fun as it looks.

Sea of Thieves

sea-of-thieves

Publisher: Microsoft

Released on: Xbox One and PC

Release Date: 2018

Sea of Thieves is one of those games in the new “shared world” genre which is basically an MMO without the massive bit. Its multiplayer and procedural elements are the impelling cause to play the game. Looting caves, sailing the seas, finding lost treasure, ship combat and just good old pirate role playing are all available to participate in at the players leisure. I predict that this will be a huge game once it finally releases especially on twitch and youtube and the positive word of mouth will help it ship more units (pun intended) Try out the the game in in the Alpha which I am apart of as well and help build the experience.

Detroit: Become Human

Detroit Become Human

Publisher: Sony

Released on: PS4

Release date: TBA

I love David Cage games and I love how weirdly flawed they are. I enjoy this type of story telling in games because it’s so unique. Over the years I feel like Quantic Dream has learnt some lessons from similar games and has implemented them into Detroit. There are a lot more options and ways to impact the story in Detroit. Activities and dialogue choices that may seem to have obvious outcomes do not and that adds a level of replayablity that these games need in order to thrive is this competitive marketplace. It also helps that the level of acting in Detroit is a cut above the rest, over the years David Cage and his team have learnt to extract the best out of their actors especially the celebrity leads that they are infatuated with. I love the setting and premise of this game and it should be  a source of great discussions online once it is released.

Spiderman

Spiderman

Publisher: Sony

Released on: PS4

Release Date: 2018

A Spiderman game made by Insomniac seems like a no brainer it’s a wonder why it took so long for it to come to fruition. The fact that this game is exclusive to Sony is a big get for them and here’s a fun tid bit the game came in a deal for Spidey to appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Anyway, the game looks to have borrowed some elements from the Batman Arkham games and has also made some serious improvements to movement around the city, swinging and traversal looks simple and fun. Yuri Lowenthal is reprising his role as Peter Parker but the post credit scene at Sony’s presser teased the presence of Miles Morales so that’s something to look out for.

The Surprises!

Life is Strange: Before the Storm

LiS before the storm

Publisher: Square Enix

Released on: PS4, Xbox One and PC

Release Date: September 2017

Im a huge fan of narrative based adventure games and the original Life is Strange is a stellar example of a brilliant game in that genre. This 3 episode epilogue is perfect for bringing is fans back to this world and getting us ready for the planned sequel that’s meant to be released sometime next year.

Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle

Mario and Rabbids

Publisher: Ubisoft

Released on: Nintendo Switch

Release Date: November 2017

Okay I never expected a Rabbids and Mario crossover, I also never expected a Mario and Rabbids crossover to possibly be one of my most anticipated games of the year. Furthermore I didn’t expect this game to be the XCOM 2 follow up my heart desires so much. Yes, this is a tactical, turn based RPG that has some open traversal elements as well. It looks colourful it looks fun and most of all it looks really truly good.

Metro: Exodus

Metro

Publisher: Deep Silver

Released on: PS4, Xbox One and PC

Release Date: TBA

The Metro series of games are a First Person Shooter franchise that feel very different from your standard fare military shooter. They are a bit more open ended and put an emphasis on player choice. Stealth options are available to a certain extent and the game can shift from survival horror to a scripted set piece of loud explosions and actions. These worlds are brilliant and beautiful to explore and this sequel looks even better than the previous iterations. I can’t wait to get my hands on it.

The Last Night

tln_screen_taxi

Publisher: Raw Fury Games

Released on: Xbox One and PC

Release Date: 2018

There has been a resurgence in interest of the cyberpunk genre of late and I am so glad that we are getting a lot of new games in that space. The Last Night was inspired by classic games like Flashback and Abes Odyssey and is putting a modern spin on them. Its artstyle is simply glorious and the gameplay sounds dynamic and emergent, Which I know are buzzwords but we have to have faith, I have faith. This game is I believe my personal Game of the Show for E3 2017.

Metroid Prime 4

Metroid-4

Publisher: Nintendo

Released on: Nintendo Switch

Release Date: 2018

Wow, wow. Vaporware coming to life, what is this a dream? Sure all we got was a teaser, a banner but really it’s all I needed. I have been clamouring for a new Metroid Prime for years, years almost a decade at this point and it’s great to finally know it’s in some form of production somewhere.

Beyond Good and Evil 2

beyond-good-and-evil

Publisher: Ubisoft

Released on: PS4, Xbox One and PC

Release Date: LoL!!

I don’t even know what to say here, this game has held such a special place in my heart for many years way over a decade. I’ve bought it on multiple consoles over the years and have consistently come back to it and have been impressed every time. The sequel, which actually turned out to be a prequel looks better and sounds better than I could have imagined. Michel Ancel broke into tears when announcing this and I’m sure most of us fans did too as well at some point. At the moment it sounds like a shared open world RPG not dissimilar to Destiny or The Division. We still don’t know much about the gameplay but we can be rest assured that for a game that took this long to be in pre-production it will turn out to be another classic.

So Those were the games I was most excited for, some other notable games would be Anthem the new BioWare take on Destiny which looks like Destiny with better graphics, the Arc system Works Dragonball Z fighter, Monster Hunter for consoles and hey even Days Gone doesn’t sound like total generic trash anymore.

So what games are you guys looking forward to and why?

  1. Welcome back to your blog! Several of the games you have listed have made the Wish List in our house. Since no one could agree on which game to purchase first I decided to choose God of War. I was SO excited when I saw this video (https://youtu.be/gOE2BVRCUkM ) and then my son pointed out it’s only on PS4. We have an xbox one. Facepalm!

You have good taste in games too it seems.

Well said but my Opinion Is...
