What To Take Note of From E3 2018

If you have been on social media this weekend you must have come across the term E3, The annual Electronic Entertainment Expo is currently underway and all the main Press Conferences took place over the weekend. E3 is gamings biggest weekend filled with brand new game announcements and industry defining moments, Here are the main highlights or talking points to take from this years conference.

CyberPunk 2077

The followup to CD Projekt Red’s critically acclaimed Witcher 3 finally showcased its trailer at the Microsoft conference. The trailer highlighted the general themes and tone that the game is shooting for. A Neo Noir, Cyberpunk aesthetic complete with funky spiky mohawks and trans human implants.

This is arguably the biggest game shown at this years E3 and news from hands off behind closed doors states that it is a First Person Role Playing Game. You play as a character you can customise, called V, The games has melee combat, ranged combat, driving, hacking and lost of branching dialogue trees.

We still haven’t got a release date for the game but can expect more news at Gamescom in a few months.

The Last of Us Part 2

The Last of Us 2 (2)

Another followup to a critically acclaimed game, the trailer shown at Sony’s media briefing set the tone for the game. We play as Ellie, a recurring character from the previous game who is now in her early Twenties/late teens. The game is both very violently brutal and somber. The highlight of the showcase was a cinematic that portrayed Ellie kissing her lover, which is a new thing for AAA video games and a welcome one at that.

The Last of Us 2 (1)

No release date was given for The Last of Us Part 2 but we can deduce that it is not more than 15 months away.

Resident Evil 2 Remake

We finally got to see a cinematic of the long awaited remake to one of Capcoms most beloved titles at Sonys media briefing. This announcement has a special place in my heart because its one I had been hoping for, for many years. Gameplay changed and upgrades seem to have been made and obviously the visuals enhanced to match current generation trends. If you missed this one I strongly suggest checking it out once its released on 25th January next year.

Super Smash Bros Ultimate

Nintendo got to give us a deep dive into the new Smash Bros game, highlighting the various gameplay tweaks and characters changes in the new Switch version of the game. The biggest news from this announcement was that all characters who have previously appeared in the Smash Bros games would be available for this one. The new characters added were the Inkling and Ridley. The game releases on 7th December 2018.

Death Stranding

Hideo Kojima finally got to show us some none combat gameplay footage of the his highly anticipated upcoming game. The trailer shows us Norman Reedus’ character transporting goods in vast open beautiful vistas and hillsides. It also got to show us some stealth gameplay and 2 new female characters played by Leya Sedoux and Lindsay Wagner.

We still don’t have a release date for this game, but I’m sure we will get one at Playstation Experience later this year.

Microsoft Acquires 1st Party Studios

Phil Spencer the head of Xbox announced 5 new first party studio acquisitions to add to Microsoft Studios. These studios being, Undead labs makers of State of Decay, Playground Games (Forza Horizon), Compulsion Games (We Happy Few), The Initiative, a brand new studio headed by Darrell Gallagher formerly of Crystal Dynamics and finally Ninja Theory creators of DmC and Hellblade: Senuas Sacrifice.

What this means is that for the foreseeable future Microsoft now has the staff and calibre to create and publish some of gamings best products exclusively for the Xbox family of consoles.

End of a Generation

Sony told investors just before E3 that the PS4 is in its “final phase.” This comes as no surprises seeing as most generations tend to last approx 5 years (we got the PS4 in 2013) Similarly, Phil Spencer nonchalantly announced that there are new Xbox Consoles currently in pre production which basically means that two of the hardware manufacturers are prepping for the next generation. No concrete announcement was made but we can expect more patent leaks and news about the PS5 or Xbox 2? to be announced at next years E3.

Yakuza coming to PC

Yakuza 0

I just recently got into the Yakuza franchise with the release of Yakuza 0 last year and it made mine and many gamers top 10 end of year lists. PC gamers can rejoice as the once sony exclusive title will now be available to play on steam for a significant discount as well. Yakuza 0 and Yakuza Kiwami (remake of 1) are both coming to Steam which means its just a matter of time before we see Kiwami 2, 3 and Song of Life show up on the platform as well.

Starfield and Elder Scroll VI

In a move that was very much out of left field and kind of necessity, Todd Howard of Bethesda Studios, announced that Starfield an open world space RPG is currently in Alpha and will be released for the next generation of consoles. We also got a tease of the much anticipated followup to Skyrim, The Elder Scrolls VI. No details were given but the announcement alone was huge enough to crash a few news sites.

FIFA 19 Champions League

With Konami deciding to not give a damn about game development anymore EA managed to snatch the UEFA Champions league licence from them. Meaning that all the branding and game modes that come with the licence will now be available in all of FIFA 19’s modes including the Journey 3 which takes Alex Hunter to Real Madrid. FIFA 18’s World Cup mode is currently free on all platforms for a limited time so you can go and download the game and the world cup update while actual World Cup is on as well.

So those were the big announcements from this years E3, even if you didnt get to watch it , this news should keep you abreast with the major highlights from the show. What was your favourite announcement let me know?
